Dancers of the Month May 2020
Casey Mathis is the 17 year old daughter of Wayne and Leigh Mathis. She is a Senior at McDowell High School. She will be attending Western Carolina University, majoring in Criminal Justice.
Casey is a Senior Twirler in Miss Kristi’s baton class and has been dancing for 10 years now. She is also a member of the McDowell High Titan Band playing both the trumpet and the french horn.
She is looking forward to her last recital and competition in July.
Hannah Strickland, 18, Senior at McDowell High School, lives in Marion, NC. Her parents are Angela and Wesley Strickland, and brother Chris Adams.
Hannah is on the honor roll, and is finishing at McDowell Tech her degree in Cosmetology. She wants to own her own shop one day, or pursue doing hair and makeup on movie sets one day.
Hannah has been dancing for 13 years, and loves her dance family. Dance has given her a place to make friends and express herself.
My name is Sydney Young. I am 17 years old and will be graduating from McDowell High School as well as McDowell Technical Community College with my associate degree in science in the next few months. I am currently enrolled to go to Appalachian State Honors College in the Fall with plans to study Audiology and Speech Language Pathology.
I have been fortunate enough to be a dancer at Miss Jacie’s School of Dance for 13 years now. I take tap, jazz, and baton. I was awarded Dancer of the Year for 2019 which I was grateful for. I am also the assistant baton teacher for Miss Kristi for the second year in a row, which has been a blessing and a valuable learning experience for me. Helping Miss Kristi with these classes has made me aware that I have a passion for working with young children and hope to be able to continue to teach and develop future baton twirlers. I performed in the 2017 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and am thrilled to be on the list to go again this coming November. I am heartbroken that it is my last year dancing, but I am appreciative to my parents, Miss Jacie, Miss Kristi, and all my fellow dancers for investing in me and helping me blossom into the dancer and person I have always aspired to be.
